Algo bueno, algo malo, algo feo

El libro pretende ser un estudio de los comienzos del cristianismo; el autor reescribe con sus propias palabras y según su interpretación, algunos de los evangelios, los Actos de los Apóstoles y las cartas de San Pablo. Pero lo hace selectivamente, resaltando lo que le gusta y denigrando de lo que no. Obviamente de modo arbitrario. Es la reflexión personal de un individuo que pasó de agnóstico a fiel creyente y de nuevo a agnóstico. En este proceso ha reflexionado sobre los orígenes del cristianismo. Por estos motivos, el libro no es para nada un análisis crítico del cristianismo, pero el leerlo estimula a buscar la verdad estudiando otros libros más serios y releyendo el nuevo testamento.

El libro contiene cosas buenas, malas y feas.

De bueno: Es un libro interesante y con sus críticas al cristianismo nos hace reflexionar. El autor ha estudiado en detalle el nuevo testamento, ha pensado a fondo sobre el período y la interpretación de los evangelios, aunque cuando parece que lo ha hecho solo, sin debate con otras personas o expertos, como hablando consigo mismo. Nos muestra que nuestro cristianismo es “Paulino”, en contraste con la posición tradicional de la Iglesia que nos presenta el cristianismo como un bloque monolítico, donde todos estaban de acuerdo y proveniente de las enseñanzas de Jesús. Es Pablo el que creó el cristianismo a su medida.

El libro ha recibido premios (Lire, Le Point, Le Monde). Pero, ¿por qué los ha recibido? No lo sé. Pero al leerlo he constado que el autor especula sin pruebas. Es libro está bien escrito, mantiene el interés, se lee bien, pero es malo como historia, es malo como memoria personal, malo como novela.

De feo tiene mucho. Solo algunos ejemplos. El escritor usa palabras groseras donde no es necesario. Dice que la Virgen Maria a lo mejor disfrutaba del sexo, que a lo mejor cometía actos impuros. ¿A qué viene esta especulación? ¿Qué tiene esto que ver con los orígenes del cristianismo o con la verdad histórica del nuevo testamento? Si quiere explicar que la Virgen María era una persona normal, hay muchas otras maneras de decirlo sin ser tan grosero………. y ofensivo. ¿Se puede tomar el libro en serio después de leer esto?

Para explicar cómo hace para distinguir lo que considera verdadero en los evangelios de lo que considera fantasía el autor utiliza una descripción detallada de un video pornográfico que le gusta mucho mirar donde le parece que el placer es fingido en contraste con lo que sucede en la realidad. Carrere es capaz de percibir esta diferencia y de allí que es capaz de percibir la diferencia entre lo real y lo ficticio los evangelios (¡!). Podría haber usado mejores maneras de explicar su arbitrariedad para calificar partes de los evangelios como fantasía, como invento de sus autores. Poco serio.

Dedica capítulos a describir su búsqueda de una babysitter en Paris y a describir el proceso que siguió para escribir un libro sobre la vida de Philip K. Dick, un drogadicto estadounidense que escribía fantasías y ciencia ¿Qué tiene que ver todo esto con los orígenes del cristianismo?

Y de malo también tiene mucho. El autor le toma el pelo a sus lectores. Debe pensar que todos somos ingenuos, que no tenemos espíritu crítico. Especulación tras especulación. Dice: “……..Yo pienso que Lucas debió haber pensado que …..” “Me imagino que Lucas habría preferido escribir ….. pero pensando que no debía de hacerlo ha escrito ….…” Parece que sabe lo que pensaba o debías pensar Lucas. Comienza sus argumentos diciendo “Podría ser que ………pero aunque no lo puedo probar es posible….”, para después afirmar “Como demostramos anteriormente…” y a partir de ese momento su especulación se convierte en un hecho. Carrere usa el mismo argumento, primero especula y después lo da como un hecho probado, porque es lo que piensa, sin haber demostrado nada. El autor afirma sobre Lucas “….Y si alguna cosa no le gusta, lo cambia sin pensárselo dos veces” ¿Cómo sabe lo que le gusta o no le gusta a Lucas? ¿Cómo sabe Carrere lo que es verdad o lo que es invento? ¿Sometiéndolo a la prueba de la veracidad del video pornográfico? No es serio.

¿Recomiendo el libro? Si, los estimulará a querer saber más. Pero hay que leerlo con espíritu crítico, como si se leyese la opinión personal de alguien, opinión frecuentemente fantasiosa y no como si el libro contuviera la última palabra. Si quieren saber más sobre los orígenes del cristianismo hay que buscar en otra parte (en inglés recomiendo libros como “Paul and Jesus: How the Apostle Transformed Christianity” y “Paul: Follower of Jesus or Founder of Christianity?, no conozco libros en español sobre este tema, pero a lo mejor los podréis encontrar algunos en el sitio de Amazon o en la librería).

Espero que su publicación en español de lugar a análisis críticos más a fondo, aunque dado lo especulativo y desordenado no estoy seguro que lo merezca. Lo prestigiarían.

Disappointing, could have been a great book.

To really enjoy this book you have to be a serious studious of the Bible or a personal friend of the author. Some references and situations described by Emmanuel Carrere are very detailed and his assumptions are based on his believes, not necessarily on documented facts. As for the introduction is way too long and is more related to his personal life and experiences. More than once he gets lost in personal issues that are not relevant to the main topic. I flipped many pages so I could finish the book and go on to my next read.

Good book for quick reference

Initially I thought this book was great. Then the author stated that if you want a more comprehensive listing on all the T-SQL functions/expressions to try SQL Server 2012 Beginning T-SQL ...so I did...and that book has just been awesome. Recipes is a solid book, it takes things one step at a time...it just seemed more like a pocket reference than a book that engages you into real learning. The lessons are too brief and don't get the reader to reach a satisfactory level of competency. In all fairness this book was a solid read with a well organized approach and it's worth having. I just think that SQL Server 2012 Beginning T-SQL is a world class introductory book...the likes of which you rarely see.

The fifth book in the Algerian Saga series is wonderful. It's so great to see Marcus find love. Can't wait for Antonio`s story next. Each book is a stand alone but you will get more out of this series if you start with book 1. Great writing!I can see each story as it unfolds in my mind's eye.

I really love this series. How you keep all the couples so happy and in love after all the years is really amazing. You are truly one of a handful of authors who know how to keep the main characters in the story together and monogamous throughout the whole book and still have an exceptionally great story. I will really miss this series when it is over. Congratulations on another great book. Everyone should read this series. She doesn't disappoint. Gina
