An insider's view of professional wrestling.
By Bernard Spilka
I enjoyed the book immensely. It was well and enthusiastically written, extremely comprehensive but I wish it had an index. Professional wrestling became both understandable and realistic. Instead of figures that seemed ;mythical and false, one read about gnuine people with egos and emotions. There was a natural and authentic quality that made it very difficult for me to put the book down. If it were possible, I would have tried to read it in one sitting. I hope the author will offer additional insights in future work. .

When Wrestling Was Rasslin': The Wild and Exciting Inside Story of the Legendary Houston Wrestling Promotion

By Peter Birkholz

Through-out the territory days of wrestling Houston was a continuous hotbed of action performed by some of the most successful and well known wrestlers of the times. Originally promoted by the Sigel family it would go on to be promoted and booked by the well respected and known Paul Boesch, eventually bringing his nephew, the author of this book, Paul Birkholz into the business to help run the territory. Paul Birkoholz maintained took upon himself many various roles through-out the territory from the time he was a young lad right up until his mid-thirties for Houston wrestling and for Jim Crockett Jr.

When Wrestling Was Rasslin' is a rare and unique perspective from the inside at one of the most famous and successful territories within the National Wrestling Alliance. Peter Birkholz's son starts the book off with a touching forward leading into Peter explaining that much of the book is made up from memory and stories passed down to himself through family and the many wrestlers he has been able to spend time around, he also questions that whether wrestling folklore and fact can be separated and if it should be or not? Then let the ride begin, we flow through the book starting with the historical begins of modern pro-wrestling at the turn of the 20th century with the starting of the Sigel's and stay on the wave of history moving through the 1930's up to the 1960's. At this point we take a break to take a closer look at Paul Boesch the man who would commit fifty-five years of his life to the Houston Territory both in the ring and behind the scenes. This includes a look at his in-ring career and an in depth look at his first years as the head of the territory. From here Paul takes us through the 1970's. Up until this point the book, besides the look at Paul Boesch, has being fairly standard format with program statistics of wrestlers coming in and out of the territory, matches that took place, mixed with stories reminiscing of past stars and moments through-out the course of the decades being focused upon at the time. Now we get to the 1980's and the pace picks up in the book, this relaxing feel-good look at a promotion many held dear to them suddenly turns into a more intense look at the transpiring events that were changing the course of professional wrestling. Peter who had first hand experience at the front line of these interactions really expresses chaotic nature he felt during this period of history in Houston. He takes us through the changing of booking wrestlers through Fritz Von Erich's office to Joe Blanchard's office, nearly selling the territory to Nick Bockwinkel, the eventual merger with Bill Watts and his Mid-South Wrestling, and negotiations with Vince McMahon Jr. We hear of the emotional ending to Houston wrestling for Paul Boesch and eventually Peter too, following his employment with Jim Crockett Promotions and the National Wrestling Alliance.

What should you expect from this book? Firstly it has to be said to anyone who ever attended or watched Houston Wrestling, this is a must by for a trip down memory lane. It provides many wonderfully painted stories and events that took place during it's existence and without a shadow of a doubt will provide you with a fond time of recollecting past fond memories spent inside the Coliseum. To anyone who has not grown up in the Houston area, let's get the negative out the way with, this is not a tell all dish the dirt kind of affair. At times Peter talks of matches as if they were real and sometimes plays up to the character of a wrestler more than what may-be true. With that being said, as he notes at the beginning of the book that may happen, and in many ways it does add to the painting a picture in the minds eye of what it must've actually been like to be there. From the 1980's onward though, Peter becomes a lot more real in what he is saying about what was going on behind the scenes and it becomes much more of a personal story and a it is a fascinating read that offers insight rarely provided by an actual promoter at who was at the front line in that turbulent time in wrestling, and he does so with what appears to be genuine honesty and emotion. A thoroughly enjoyable book, a fantastic read for anyone interested in the territory days of wrestling or just the history of the business and as I mentioned it is a perfect book for someone from Houston or the surrounding areas.

A great nostalgic read
By Victor E. Sower
Whether you are a wrestling (or rasslin) fan or not, this is a great story. Readers who were around during the glory days of wrestling will recognize some familiar names. Younger fans will enjoy reading about the pioneers upon whose broad shoulders modern professional wrestling was built. The book, written by an insider, provides insight into what made professional wrestling and Houston Wrestling in particular so entertaining in its glory days. The book tells inside stories which have not been previously published. I recommend it to all who enjoy stories about the world of professional sports and entertainment.
