Valuable new book on the human hypothalamus

The hypothalamus is a brain structure that has been extremely well-studied in laboratory animals. A query about the hypothalamus through the NIH website, pub-med, results in a list of over 45,000 articles! However, probably less than 1% of these articles describe findings directly derived from human hypothalamic tissue, so the relevance of animal studies to human health and disease needs clarification. This book, edited by Bertalan Dudas, is one of the few new books that attempt to correlate animal studies of the hypothalamus with new information about the human hypothalamus. A number of authors have previously provided reviews of the anatomy and function of the human hypothalamus (eg., a chapter by Clifford Saper in the text "The Human Nervous System" edited by George Paxinos in 2004), but this book is much more recent and provides some of the latest information about hypothalamic function. Chapters by well recognized authors review the overall anatomy of the hypothalamus, specialized features of the arcuate nucleus, and the distribution of hypothalamic neurons utilizing catecholamines, neuropeptides, and other transmitters. Functional aspects of the hypothalamus regarding the control of reproduction, appetite, circadian rhythms, thermoregulation, and sleep are comprehensively reviewed. Hypothalamic aging and its relationship to neurological and psychiatric disorders are also examined. This book is essential for clinicians and academicians interested in the role of neuroendocrinology and the hypothalamus in normal and pathological states.
