"The Golden Horse" (Zelta zirgs) a play written by Rainis is one of the most important pieces of Latvian literature. It is now translated to English by Vilis Inde. "The Golden Horse" is a fairy tale that provided Latvians with lessons to achieve cultural autonomy and independence. Idealism - Altruism - Unity! These were the keys for victory over Imperialist Russia and the Baltic Germans who controlled Latvia at the turn of the 20th century. Rainis wrote "The Golden Horse" following the 1905 Russian/Latvian Revolution and before the Declaration of Independence in 1918. He and his wife Aspazija were the spiritual leaders in the fight for greater rights for workers, peasants and Latvian culture. Although independence was achieved, it was short lived. The Soviet Union annexed Latvia during World War II. Fifty years passed, and a new opportunity for freedom arose as the Soviet Union disintegrated. Therefore, Latvia achieved its second opportunity for independence in 1991. In this play, a young peasant climbs the mountain of blue glass and green ice, wakes the princess and saves the kingdom. Good prevails over evil. Light overcomes darkness. Idealism, altruism and unity provide the path to victory at any level of society. The "Afterword" of the book includes an extensive discussion of Latvian history and Rainis' crucial role in Latvia's independence movement. It provides the key to understanding the symbolism that was obvious to every Latvian at the time it was written. The translation also introduces the reader to important aspects of Latvian culture. Perhaps, the most important is the close relationship with nature. Rainis polishes the amber so that the reader can see the detail within. Rainis' lessons are forever timely and relevant though out the world, Latvia and even the individual.

About the Author
Vilis Inde is a first generation Latvian whose first language was Latvian. He was raised in the hope that the family could one day return to an independent Latvia. His immersion in Latvian culture was great. As a child, he participated in a theatrical production of "The Golden Horse." The idealism presented by Rainis has stayed with him his entire life. After practicing law in New York and Minneapolis, Inde wrote "Art in the Courtroom" (Praeger 1998) and created a photo book "Signs of Marfa" (2009). He began to translate "The Golden Horse" a number of years back. The goal was to provide an English speaker with an opportunity to learn some important aspects of Latvian culture. Inde has traveled to Latvia on numerous occasions both pre and post 1991 Independence. He claims that Latvia provided him with an identity and that America provided him with the opportunity to undertake the translation

A fascinating introduction to the history of the Baltic region and to 20th century Latvia. Rainis's play "The Golden Horse" was part of the spiritual inspiration that led to an independent Latvia in 1918. In addition to Inde's expert translation of the play, this book includes extensive information about the play's historical and political context, as well as biographical details about Rainis and his contemporaries, whose intriguing lives deserve a book of their own. Inde's Latvian parents emigrated to the USA after WWII and he knows his subject intimately and well.

Not quite a page-turner, but this book presents good applications of tensor math. Sometimes difficult to follow, the book omits many "assumed" steps. However, a fine escape into the world of absolute differential calculus.

This book constitutes the history of Absolute Differential Calculus, born from the cooperation from Albert Einstein and Tullio Levi Civita. It also keeps an account on what Gregorio Ricci Curbastro had previously estabilished on Tensors. I think it's a wonderful occasion, to study from the original papers of the authors of a theory, though they are generally somehow obscure, with respect to textbooks. I really enjoyed this book. The illustrations were beautiful and I found many of the tips helpful and interesting. I know it's hard to include everything in a book and I would have given it a five, but I just felt some of the tips were not as explicit as they might have been. Overall, a good read and helpful

Valuable new book on the human hypothalamus

The hypothalamus is a brain structure that has been extremely well-studied in laboratory animals. A query about the hypothalamus through the NIH website, pub-med, results in a list of over 45,000 articles! However, probably less than 1% of these articles describe findings directly derived from human hypothalamic tissue, so the relevance of animal studies to human health and disease needs clarification. This book, edited by Bertalan Dudas, is one of the few new books that attempt to correlate animal studies of the hypothalamus with new information about the human hypothalamus. A number of authors have previously provided reviews of the anatomy and function of the human hypothalamus (eg., a chapter by Clifford Saper in the text "The Human Nervous System" edited by George Paxinos in 2004), but this book is much more recent and provides some of the latest information about hypothalamic function. Chapters by well recognized authors review the overall anatomy of the hypothalamus, specialized features of the arcuate nucleus, and the distribution of hypothalamic neurons utilizing catecholamines, neuropeptides, and other transmitters. Functional aspects of the hypothalamus regarding the control of reproduction, appetite, circadian rhythms, thermoregulation, and sleep are comprehensively reviewed. Hypothalamic aging and its relationship to neurological and psychiatric disorders are also examined. This book is essential for clinicians and academicians interested in the role of neuroendocrinology and the hypothalamus in normal and pathological states.

About the Author
Norman Beaupré, Ph.D., was born in Maine and pursued his graduate education at Brown University. He taught for thirty years at the University of New England in Maine. He is presently Professor Emeritus at this institution. He has traveled abroad extensively and spent two sabbaticals in Paris. He has written and published nineteen books so far, in English and in French. In 2008 he was awarded the medal of L’Ordre des Arts et Lettres, grade d’officier by the French Ministry of Culture and Communications in Paris for his outstanding contribution to French culture.

This is a book of ideas. It is in a Continental French tradition of using the novel form to explore thoughts rather than actions. As another reviewer commented, this is a slow read but it is often a stimulating read. It is about Maria Callas but it is also about the Franco-American experience and as such is an interesting glimpse into yet another facet of our culture. But, do not expect folklore here. This is a novel about a Franco man in the larger world.

Beautiful and very comprehensive book of family prayers

This family prayer book should be on every Catholic bookshelf to be used each day within all of the domestic churches all around the world. It is sure to bring the family closer together and closer to God! I highly recommend it!

Very happy with book, love prayers. The book is easy reading, my 9 yr had no problem reading from it and enjoys the prayers. Absolutely recomend it.
