From the Dust Jacket: "In this massive political ethnography and history of the Muslim emirate of Daura (Northern Nigeria) from 1800-1958, the author continues to show his dual concern with methodology and historical reconstruction and analysis. In addition to delineating the structure and changes of power and authority in the evolution of the Hausa kingdom, his analysis raises previously neglected concepts and themes that are important to historians and anthropologists alike. One issue of more general concern to students of the growth of African states is the question about the progressive reliance upon slave officials in developing states, a widely supported assumption which this study tends to belie. As an anthropologist M.G. Smith's contribution to historians is his rejection of a priori notions of causality in favor of precision of observation and method which allows investigators to develop a model from the historical data.
