About the Author
TED TRAVIS grew up on Long Island. While studying voice at the Vienna Conservatory, he came to faith in Christ. Turning his focus from music to ministry, he moved to Denver and began an unexpected life of urban youth development. After a season of training and mentoring leaders in Buffalo and Chicago, Ted and his wife Shelly moved back to Colorado to establish a center for training urban leaders in the practice of transformational discipleship. They have three children and three grandchildren.

I firmly believe that in working with youth, developing leadership and discipleship go hand-in-hand.
In Building Cathedrals, Ted Travis shares a strategy for discipleship with urban youth that links youth leadership development to discipleship. Ted and his wife Shelly served urban youth for nearly 30 years with Neighborhood Ministries in Denver. He now writes, in a very practical way, about some of the lessons learned in an effort to educate and edify the next generation of leaders.
Using personal experiences and real-life stories, the book begins with an honest look at how difficult it is for the traditional church youth program to make a difference in light of the daily realities of youth in the at-risk communities of cities like Denver, Baltimore, St. Louis, or Chicago. It goes on to show the importance of looking beyond the damaging influence of “the hood” and focus on a young person’s divine imprint – God’s unique design. Travis believes the way to accomplish this is through an apprenticeship that leads to youth development. The paradigm shift is from seeing a young person as saved versus unsaved to; are they a disciple, not yet a disciple, or open to becoming a disciple.
Building Cathedrals is organized into three sections; the need based on the context, the foundation of youth development, and the praxis or practical application. Each chapter ends with questions for the reader which could also be used in a group discussion with other youth leaders. Finally, Travis outlines the step by step model he uses, “transformational discipleship” that is rooted in the development of young people as leaders.

Since reading “Building Cathedrals” there has been a radical restructuring of how I do urban youth development work. Much of my restructuring came in reflection of myself and my style of leadership. My leading and developing work amongst urban youth must be transformational, and a time where youth can discover how God has created them.

Additionally, the time God gives me with urban youth must be a time where honest answers are given to honest questions about “where is Jesus?” in tuff life situations. When urban youth can explore and define where Jesus shows up in their lives, they become good critical thinkers, alway analyzing their situation to make the best decisions.

Furthermore, in all of the youth’s learning and discovery, the heart of the ministry is for them to practice it. True transformation and development is a space when youth can live out what God has done and will continue to do in their lives amongst their peers in leadership. An aspiration of hope is created when peers see a reflection of themselves leading, they become hungry to do the same!

I say to all in ministry who work with urban youth or desire to work with urban youth, I believe in the teachings of Ted Travis, author of Building Cathedrals. What he unfolds in the his book is making me a much more effective kingdom leader among urban youth. I am sure it can be your truth also, if you give it a shot!

Tapan Panda is presently Director at Kotler-Srinivasan Center for Excellence in Marketing and Director-PGPM, Great Lakes Institute of Management Studies, Chennai. He has more than fourteen years of teaching experience. Formerly he was a Professor in Marketing at Indian Institute of Management, Indore. Prof. Panda has also been a faculty member at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow and Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode.

Sunil Sahadev is a Lecturer in Marketing Management at the University of Sheffield, UK. He was earlier Assistant Professor in Marketing, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, and has over eight years of teaching experience in distribution channel management at the postgraduate level. Aristophanic primer

If you don't know your parabasis from your agon, your are probably better off starting your study of Aristophanes with this book than one that assumes more like Strauss' Socrates and Aristophanes. In this book, Dover gives you an overview of the structure of the Attic comedy, defines terms, explains how they were staged and selected for performance (all the mundane issues Strauss does not deign to cover). Strauss is, of course, still the undisputed champ in explaining the meaning of the plays, but you have a better chance of understanding his explanations if you've read Dover first. Crede experto. I did it the other way round.

Aristophanean Basics

Admittedly, Strauss' Socrates and Aristophanes is the best book of higher criticism on Aristophanes' remaining plays. Unfortunately, that book has a painful deficiency: Strauss overrates his readers, assuming they know their agon from their parabasis (a dubious assumption). Dover, while not where near so insightful, makes up for Strauss' deficiency by explaining the parts of the comedy, how they were staged and all the other practical details Strauss disdains. If you are a classical scholar, well maybe Dover's book is a waste of time. If not, then it is a valuable adjunct to Strauss( Better read before Strauss. I did it the other way. Not pretty.).

Ideal Introduction to Aristophanes

This is certainly the best serious introduction to Aristophanes you can find. He covers almost everything: his introductory chapters cover the textual evidence, stage directions, the comic theatre, play structure, parody. Having done that, he works through the plays using each play to examine a different aspect of Aristophanes and the comic theatre. There are a few pages on Aristophanes' predecessors and rivals, then a larger section on the nachleben - posterity - of Arisophanes' works, finishing with an examination of various translations (the latest translations discussed are those of the 1960s - naturally for a 1972 book) and adaptations. It's a book I can't recommend enough, academic without being obscure and clear without being patronizing.

Other general books on Aristophanes that you may find interesting have a more limited range. Russo's _Aristofane: Autore di teatro_ (translated as Aristophanes: An Author for the Stage) is excellent for just that - Aristophanes as a playwright of real plays. MacDowell's Aristophanes and Athens: An Introduction to the Plays is a more recent book, somewhat like Dover but more focussed on the plays rather than themes, and rather less useful in my opinion. For a major literary study, Silk's Aristophanes and the Definition of Comedy might be tried.

For the Graecist, I recommend Willi's The Languages of Aristophanes: Aspects of Linguistic Variation in Classical Attic Greek (Oxford Classical Monographs). But that's for the more experienced.

Finally, as a very short - but intense - introduction, Ussher's Aristophanes (New Surveys in the Classics No 13) is excellent, and should be findable for five or so dollars second hand.

My second book from this author - enough template to just get going, but also enough theory to rapidly mash up one's own designs. I use a Silhouette paper cutter to rapidly move to prototypes, using dotted cuts for score lines.

Inspirational reading

I originally wanted this book for ideas on making larger custom boxes but all of the designs are more in-line with crafting. There are excellent layout sheets that you can copy and enlarge so you aren't trying to figure out where to make all of those complex folds. As I was reviewing the contents, I was inspired to start working on some smaller craft projects but I really don't have the time right now, but in the future, this book will be a great reference. Every artist/maker should have it on the shelf just in case.

Confessions of a Pharmacist/An Honest Review

I was very enlightened when I read Robert Mix's book. There was a lot of information I was surprised I enjoyed reading about and am now encouraging my 19 year old daughter to become a pharmacist. He included tips for lay people that I found helpful. Most importantly was keeping your medical records with you at all times in case of an accident where you could be unconscious. Another grand one was to put your in case of emergency phone numbers labelled as such in your contact list on your cell phone. His take on how important it is to have human contact with patients I found refreshing. In a growing world of declining public relations I like the idea of my pharmacist taking the time to go over my prescriptions with me. I hope there continues to be more pharmacists like he was. Rob Mix proves to had been an extremely caring and diligent pharmacist and his writing on the subject reflects that as well.

This is an excellent book for individuals who are seeking a career in pharmacy, for current pharmacists, and for the layman who seeks to be enlightened about medications. Obviously, Dr. Mix is highly educated or he would not be able to write a book with such insight and knowledge. I actually loved the personal stories as he witnessed them during his days of work in his field. One comes away with a much better appreciation for pharmacists who work hard on a daily basis to provide medications accurately and promptly to all people who are in need. Without question, pharmacists are an invaluable resource and should be given the same respect as physicians. In the final analysis, Dr. Mix shares his personal story which in itself is heartwarming. Through his own trials and tribulations of life, he still manages to maintain a positive and sincere outlook on life.

He tell it like it is.

Informative and reinforced my thinking regarding medications. It had a positive impact on me. The author has deep passion and emotion and overcame huge odds to positively impact all of us through writing his story. He shares his financial situations and relationship difficulties in an open and honest way that touched me deeply. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. His love for the profession and the family are remarkable. People wanting to know more about their medications need to read this book. I was informed about the truths and myths of many drugs.
