Great Book but may be a little difficult for the beginner

Holden sets out to write a history of Astrology concentrating on the changes in techniques rather than simply the social or economic context. His main thesis is that the use of the horoscope originated with Greek Astrologers based in Alexandria around the third and second centuries BCE. As the Babylonians did not use horoscopes, Holden gives them only cursory treatment in his history.

As a guide to the changing nature of Astrology, this book is excellent, dealing with Greek Astrology both before and after Ptolemy - who Holden shows was outside the mainistream of his day. He goes on to look at the contribution of a variety of Arabic speaking Astrologers and the development of the horoscopic approach through medieval times and eventually up to the present day. Holden illustrates many of his points with extracts from the writings of the Astrologers he is reviewing - which can sometimes be demanding because the prose can be somewhat obscure for the modern reader.

That being said, it is a very readable book, though some knowledge of Astrology, especially traditional Astrology will help the reader. There are intersting snippets, such as Dr. John Dee the Astrologer to Queen Elizabeth used to sign his notes to her as '007', with the cross of the 7 extended over the zeroes to represent a pair of eyes as Dee saw himself as the Queen's 'eyes'. This was picked on several centuries later by Ian Fleming as his source for James Bond's designation.

Holden also relates Alan Leo's brush with the law against 'Fortune Telling' in the early twentieth century - a brush which led to him concentrating on 'character' readings rather than predicitions and opened up the way for the shift towards a psychological approach to Astrology.

This book is not designed to show how to cast a horoscope or how to read one, so if that is what you are looking for then look elsewhere. For the reader who wants to know where Astrology came from, how it developed, and get some idea of the richness of the Astrological tradition this book is invaluable.

An authoritative unbiased overview of the history of astrology

James Holden has done his homework and gives us a scholarly history of horoscopic astrology. I have been an admirerer of his translations of the works of 17th century French astrologer Morin for quite some time, but I had not had the opportunity until recently to read this text. Anyone interested in a reliable history of western astrology will appreciate this book. Holden gives not only historical facts but also explains astrological techniques in vogue at various times in history. I highly recommend this book to all serious students of astrology. James Holden deserves to be honored by the astrological community for his many scholarly contributions to the art.

This book has more detailed historical information about which cultures contributed what to astrology than any other book. Scholarly work, but also very easy to read, unlike some of the extraordinarily dry fare one typically gets in academic books. Must have for serious astrologers, who want to know the origins of their craft.

Stepping up and out of condemnation

How many times have we walked past stroke victims – in the parks, on benches, in beds – and just thought that damaging part of the brain that results in loss of various normal functions of the body is a fate worse than death. Stop. Right there. And read STROKE VICTOR. This may very easily be us at some point in the future and like Bob Mandell we too can just refuse to become the vegetable that cerebrovascular accidents produce. Refresher terms: a stroke is what happens when not enough blood (and thus oxygen and nutrition) reaches a part of the brain. The medical term for stroke is cerebrovascular accident, or CVA. There are three types of strokes - thrombotic stroke (a blood clot forms in an artery and blocks the flow of blood), embolic stroke (a blood clot forms in another part of the body and moves to the brain), and hemorrhagic stroke (a weak blood vessel in the brain bursts and blood moves into the brain tissue. The brain cells and tissue do not receive oxygen and nutrients and this results in aphaisa, ataxia, apraxia, dysarthria, dysphasia, hemeparesis, and hemiplegia.

Excellent!

Stroke Victor is a very easy read. It is no-nonsense. It is not verbose. It gets straight to the point. If you've never had a stroke or known someone who has, then you may only wish to read the first few chapters. The later chapters are comprised of helpful tips, motivators and other information which is only germane to those who have had a stroke.

It's an interesting read and only occasional profane. It gets raw sometimes, as Mandell describes what he's thinking and feeling. The thing about a stroke is that it can manifest in any one of few different ways. When a dear relative of ours had a stroke, he became an almost literal six-year-old who was angry with us since there was clearly (in his mind) nothing wrong with him. He would have become violent if we hadn't convinced him that we were going to punch him in the face. We actually drew our fist back, so as to be poised for believability. He was undergoing psychoses as well.

In this sense, we feel that it's easy to identify with the author. Granted, his stroke was completely different. However, there are a few similarities. Mandell is also occasionally funny.

Overall, it's short, well-written and to-the-point. You owe yourself a read if you think that you will ever be in this horrendous situation, of either having a stroke yourself, or being in the caregiver position for another who has.

GREAT BOOK

A friend recommended this book to me as a good and easy read even though I had no stroke motive for reading it. I found the book to be very enlightening on a topic which I previously didn’t know much about- strokes and the lengthy recovery process. Personally, I’m in awe of the author that he was able to recover with the strength that he did. I also was impressed to see that there were no bounds or parameters regarding the topics he chose to include in the book. For example, he approached regaining his sexual life with humor and courage. Over all, I honestly found the book to be a great read that was both informative and personal. Something like that is so rare in novels nowadays! I appreciated that he included info about stroke research and I’ve already visited the website “strokevictor.com” His writing style was one which reached out to the audience and really pulls you in. If he were planning on writing anything in the future I’d definitely be interested in giving it a read.

Hi, I loved this book. This is the second book in the Series, and I enjoyed it more than the first. I haven't come across many horse shifter books, so the story was quite unique from that perspective. I love the interplay between the three main characters, and the passion they expressed. I would read it again, and that's the best praise I can give. Well done!

Stallions, mare and jackasses, oh my!

I love this series. Yes, there's only two books so far, but it's quality stuff! Ms Erika Masten has another hit with this book. For those who haven't read either of these books......

The premise of this series is horse shifters... werehorses..... horse weres? *ponders*... anyway..... descendants of Scots-Irish immigrants who could shape shift into horses. Our feisty heroine is a BBW (big beautiful woman... plus size!) who is trying to save her grandfather's business from the jacka.... *ahem* bad guys. Our stud-muffin... uhmmm... studs? studley heroes! work for her as mechanics and are hung like... well... uhmmm... you know.... (I have to give you a bit of a spoiler.... hot hot hotness in the garage!) *ahem* Ok, I can't say more without giving away storyline, so let's just say it's a hot, fast read that I highly recommend!

I do have to admit, I had 4 problems with this book.... 2 teeny tiny typos that my inner grammar nazi noticed, it was too good (read it too fast!) and it was toooo tooooo toooooooooooooo short!!!! Ms Erika! Please!!!! More books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Sequel!

I'll admit it, I was originally put off by the fact that the men in this story were brothers, but I'm a huge Erika Masten fan, so I have it a chance. I'm really glad I did. You're introduced to the town of Windemere and it's special citizens in Bad Hoss (a fantastic book, by the way!). The story of the Windemere stallions continues in If Wishes Were Horses. This was a sweet, sexy story of Camille, Dale, and Markum. I loved the complicated characters and the drama of this story. Unlike some erotica, it wasn't just about sex. Erika did a great job weaving the new and old characters together. I hope there's more to this series because I'm not ready for this to end!
