About the Author

With over 20 years experience in design management, David Holston has worked in a variety of organizations including higher education, fortune 50 companies and small start-ups. He served as a lead designer for General Electric, Martin Marietta and Lockheed Martin Services companies before becoming Senior Art Director at the Philadelphia advertising firm Signature Communications. Currently, Holston is the Director of Design at the nation's second largest university, The University of Texas at Austin, where he is responsible for the development and management of the university's brand positioning, brand identity and marketing communications.

Seems good, avoid kindle version

I only read about 1/4 of this book and found it interesting, however the kindle version was almost unreadable. I really hate how the kindle fire versions present photos in books like this. I'm almost to the point of only buying print copies of design books :(.

A Great read, and at the right time

The Strategic Designer was a great book to read, and more importantly, made me think.

Right off the bat, the book talks about what a prospective client needs from a designer, and it is much more than Design. Most all of us know this, but David seems to be very good at explaining exactly why, and giving examples. As more and more people get involved with design, professionals need to find a way to show their continued value to prospective clients. This book covers quite a few examples of what a designer should know, and its that dreaded "business" word, but its the truth.

The book would be worth its price and more with just the above info, but David also goes into detail about Design Strategy, and the many ways you can go about going from research, to concept, to finished product and enjoy your collaboration with clients at the same time. Most seasoned designers will know much of the information in this book, but its more of a smack of reality that the time is now to get serious about the entire Process of Design and Business as a designer.

The book's strength is not in creating new knowledge - but in repackaging what is largely already known, experientially by every designer - in an easy to carry tome.

In this sense, the book is not a product of the Conceptual Age, but instead is a well-designed, convenient and accessible agglomeration, aggregating both explicit and, perhaps the greater achievement here, tacit knowledge on the subject.

The design world is a much better place for having this book at its disposal.

About the Author
Terry Shintani, M.D.,J.D., M.P.H., received his Master's degree in nutrition at Harvard University, and both his medical degree and law degree from the University of Hawaii. He is on the clinical faculty at the University of Hawaii School of Medicine and School of Public Health and is Director of Preventive Medicine at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. He also has a private practice in Hawaii specializing in nutrition-related disease. He was named a 1995 "Food Hero" by Eating Well Magazine, and his award-winning program is published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition as well as Encyclopedia Britannica's 1995 Medical and Health Annual. Dr. Shintani, along with one of his diabetic patients, has been featured on NBC Dateline's show with Dr. Bob Arnot.

Changing what you eat and your behavior toward food

I puchased this book as part of the Hawaiian diet program. It came with the cookbook, 21 day get started meal guide, lose weight while you sleep booklet, 2 audio and 2 video tapes back in the year 2000. I have continued to work with the priciples of the Eat More, Weigh Less diet and it really does work !!! Dr. Shintani explains the scientific evidence while using humor and genuine concern to help guide all the people who want to sincerely make an effort for the last time in dealing with improving your overall health, and changing your diet while losing weight. The Eat More Index is the key !
There are many reasons why people are overweight. It can range from biological to psychological influences but...If one can make the commitment to change their behavior toward food and eat healthy...then YOU are half way there to a better newly improved YOU !!! The Eat More, Weigh Less priciples can truly help as you make your way to the new path...
I sincerely wish all of you Good Health as you enjoy a new(old) way to Eating More and Weighing Less.

Success Finally!

I followed this eating plan with excellent results, The Doctor puts the info in such positive terms

that you can't go wrong and you want to read more. I enjoyed the way he visually displays how much

veggies you'd have to eat to equal 2500 calories. Even though I was eating veggies all the time I was satisfied.

I started out at 226 and ended up at 185 in 22 weeks (Feb to July 2011).

That's from a 38" waist to 34" waist. My cardio of choice was walking daily. I'm working

towards a 32" waist by including free weights and lifting heavy (I reached a plateau in July). Overall his book is a good solid read.

I give this book 5 stars due to the results. I'll keep the readers posted on my goal of a 32" waist.

For the digital age badass electromechanical engineer

Circuit models for electrical machines served the E.E. community well (and our civilization!) for decades. In the hands of the skilled practitioner of circuit theory, they can become more accurate than they have any right to be. Take for example the induction motor (my preference-maybe an ocd thing!). Because of transformer action causing current to be induced in the rotor, it's modeled by a transformer! A few strategic resistances and reactances are put into the transformer circuit to leach off power due to eddy currents in iron cores, flux leakage, etc. Performance- just a few percentage points off! But still off and always will be. Circuit elements are static and cannot possibly subsume the physical process of the motor motion.
This book gives methods which are true to the physical construct of the machine and its operating physics. The programming/computer graphic savvy engineer could possibly develop his own simulation software from it's contents and run it on a gamer's laptop.
Magnetic flux density (B field vector) is approximated by finite elements (more accurate with finer mesh-you'll use the magnetic vector potential or rather find it in finite elements-B is the curl of this). Flux lines (vector field trajectories or integral curves of B) are plotted by using Euler's method or Runge-Kutta. All can be displayed on the pc screen for various time intervals.
Torque calculation is found using either virtual work or Maxwell's stress tensor(J.D.Jackson's text Classical Electrodynamics Third Edition for this) for induction motors. A Newton torque equation can be used in conjunction with this for rotor angular speed estimate(tricky for induction though). I recommend this book be bundled with a more qualitative design book like Design of Rotating Electrical Machines. Also you might bundle it with Finite Elements for Electrical Engineers for a more thorough presentation of finite elements. I should also like to add Analysis of Electric Machinery and Drive Systems (IEEE Press Series on Power Engineering) as this is the chief reference for reference-framing which is used to take account of motion as well as to simplify integrals, mutual inductances, etc. This in itself contains a significant portion of the operating physics. For elementary examples of its use see my review of Inductance: Loop and Partial and the update in this review (it's really just the rotation group).
This all is to say that you can get all that circuit models offer and more (like nonlinearities) with these methods which use conventional physical and mathematical reasoning. No contrivances or ad hocs needed here.
The reviewed book and those books linked in this review contain all the E&M and motor concepts you'll ever need for this type of analysis/design, assuming some basic circuit and mechanics knowledge.
