Loved it!

Loved it! Rebecca Deel once again writes a novel that is both suspenseful and romantic, without resorting to using sex to hide gaps in the plot, or to blatantly increase the length of the book without furthering the storyline. This reader is no prude, but easily gets bored with books that cannot tell a story without half of it being in the bedroom or in the shower. I appreciate the clean romance and the well-crafted plot of this book. And yes, a real story line. But readers should be aware that even though this book stands well on it's own, there are references to earlier books in the series.

Best Book of the Series!

Best book of the series by far. LOVED the characters. In some ways I would consider it predictable, but it was interesting and enjoyable to read and kept me interested right to the end. I felt that Alex's mother, his brother and Ivy's mother acted together to make the me feel protective of this couple. This book is absolutely worth reading. I am partway into Fortress 1 book and it is also well written. I would recommend anything written by Rebecca Deel.

The only problem I have with her books is the poor editing. The one I remember from here was "en" was used instead of "an". There was a bad one in the prior book that also would have been caught with spell check. I don't know who she has editing her books, but they are doing her a disservice. I can't recall ever seeing as many errors in any other books. I caught a number of errors in this book, and many more errors in the prior book..and so on. I started paying attention early in the series, and now it just drives me bananas. She is a phenomenal writer, every bit as good as Nora Roberts and others in this field. She deserves better than books being published that have errors that even spell check would catch. I will randomly catch an error here or there in another book, but I've never seen so many errors in one book as I did in book 4 or any of these, really.

Wow ! Such a great story. Alex is a take charge, caring, and romantic elite member of the black ops group Durango. He will always protect , and defend His military family and his country. His estranged father is murdered in an act of revenge. Alex comes from a very dysfunctional family that has caused him great pain. Still, he steps up to protect them from a determined killer. His girlfriend Ivy is drawn into the danger. Their feelings slowly develop into love, while they support each other during all the chaos. The sexy and tenacious guys from Durango have their hands full, involved with several murder attempts, and their threatened women. Ivy had survived her own horror of physical and mental abuse that resulted in panic attacks. Alex loving care and patience helped Ivy to become the strong person she needs to be. This book has great flow, diverse and colorful characters, plus Lots of excitement.

IT WAS LIKE A TRIP THROUGH NEW YORK CITY'S SUBWAY TUNNELS!

When I was a little girl growing up in Cleveland, my mother and my aunt occasionally took me with them on rapid train rides downtown to do some shopping. As we prepared to head back home, we waited for our rapid train on the EASTBOUND platform. While waiting for the train, I used to observe downtown's short tunnel, the few railroad tracks that were there, and the train signals. I found the tunnel to be very eerie and spooky, but fascinating at the same time.

Recently, I looked through a couple of books which dealt with New York City's Grand Central Station. Both books contained brief information and a few pictures of NYC's train tunnels. So, I wondered if there were other books out there which dealt specifically with the underground train tunnels in the Big Apple.

I browsed AMAZON's website and came across a new book titled BENEATH THE STREETS: The Hidden Relics of New York's Subway System, by Jeff Litwack and Jurne. After seeing its cover, I thought this may be the book I was looking for. So, I purchased the book on the day it was released and received it within a few days.

When I opened the book for the first time and began looking at it, I could not put it down! The captivating pictures made me feel as if I was actually there in NYC's train tunnels. The vivid colors of some of the spooky-looking train tunnels caught my attention.

Some of the graffiti artwork was awesome! I wonder if some of the artists have thought about having their own graffiti art exhibits. It was truly amazing to see this type of art created by simply using cans of spray paint.

Overall, Litwack's and Jurne's BENEATH THE STREETS is an awesome source about the underground train tunnels and the work of graffiti artists. I plan to keep my copy for years to come.

I briefly visited New York City only once and I never had a chance to take a ride on the subway train. If I ever get a chance to visit the Big Apple again, I will be sure to do that.

Definitely a great book with a ton of NYC Subway /graffiti pics. Felt like I was down there myself. Looking forward to Vol.2 it ever comes out in the future. Awesome book. Highly recommend this book to everyone especially those who hate/dislike graffiti. IG: EatSleepRace

Amazing book!! I love NYC, subways, tunnels, and everything related. I was so excited for this book..Was slightly disappointed there wasnt too much dialogue or writing but the photos are wonderful and really give a sense of what its like in the tunnel system below NYC. Def. buy this if you like tunnels,trains,graffiti,and anything related. Beautiful book.

A short but detailed history of Napoleons Jena Campaign of 1806. Written in early 1900's by a English Military Officer that received his military training before the age of machine guns, tanks, and airplanes. You will enjoy his insight and interruption of what would be to him, recent history. All three of his books are very good.

About the Author
Beverly DeVries, Ed.D., has been teaching at Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma since 1993. She teaches reading diagnosis and primary and elementary literature/language arts. In all her courses, she demonstrates how teachers can use authentic assessment and instruction, using quality children's literature. She is presently on the Standards and Ethics Committee of the International Reading Association (IRA) and is the reading specialist on the Oklahoma Commission Program Advisory Board. She presents workshops on Writing Successful Reading Program Reports at the state and national level.

DeVries received her Ed.D. from Oklahoma State University. Before beginning her university teaching career, she spent most of her years in the middle school, teaching composition and reading. It was during those years that she recognized the importance of early literacy intervention.

Yet another great read!

Martin Dasko's "I like you as a friend" is another pull no punches reality check. This book has many valuable messages most people overlook. Martin teaches you to not react with emotions, which we have a tendency of doing when we are blinded by beauty. I like you as a friend teaches you how to make the right decisions while maintaining your integrity and dignity in the process. Martin's motif that can be found through most if his works is evident and simple to grasp from the get go - if you're gonna fail, fail fast. This book goes far beyond the superficialities of just dating and it can be applied to many other facets of your life including business. Much like in the precursor of relationships we have a tendency to linger and devalue ourselves by hanging on to false hopes and delusions. Just like Sun Tzu's Art of War, the book is used not only as military book but also used in business and athletics. I like you as a friend is the same in this respect. The message is universal and multi faceted. Martin teaches us to be the master of our destiny, and shows up that being vulnerable, and defeat are inevitable, however, it is how you handle it that's important. Martin gives us the tools in this detailed guide to avoid bring stuck in the friend zone but the deeper message is to not make the same mistakes incessantly and to not keep on keeping on. From the suggestion of a friend to read this book I decided to take him up on his offer. The world of dating can be confusing and painful and being always in the "Friend Zone" only adds more salt to the wound. I found Martin Dasko's writing to be witty and straight to the point. He doesn't waste time regurgitating the same thing over and over again but sticks to the facts. He is generous with his humour, non-pretentiousness, honesty, wisdom, and anecdotes of personal experience all the while keeping it entertaining. There were times he had me laugh out loud through personal connections. If you are looking to get an insight about what keeps guys in the Friend Zone with women and how to get out of the Friend Zone I highly recommend starting with Martin's book. It isn't 300 pages long but 134 pages of pure wisdom. There is also a Forward by renowned Relationship Coach Carmelia Ray. It was a complete joy to read!

I Like You as a Friend is not your average self-help ...

I Like You as a Friend is not your average self-help book. It is to the point, a little brash and humorous. As a female reader, I think this book has some unsettling notions about gender roles and tips on how to play a mind game. Be attentive but not needy. Confident but not arrogant. You have to find your own groove at the end of the day. Nonetheless, Martin points out some hard truths about dating in this day and age without the flowery bs. Although it is recommended to NOT take dating advice from a female friend as she may tell you to "tell her how you feel", I think the most important advice in the book is just that. Be forward and clear about your intentions. Be honest, open and authentic with yourself and the right person/people will come in your life. Stop obsessing, over analyzing and just live! Also, heed all warnings of being creepy or misogynistic. Good read!

Scholarly but generally readable

I believe this is designed to be a college textbook, but I found my self fascinated by it. As with any text, readibility is sometimes sacrificed for scholarly accuracy, and rightly so, I suppose. But I found enough life in the text to make this a compelling read, given the breadth of the topic and the depth in which it is examined. I also found the illustrations to be directly relative to the text, which does not always happen, even in college texts. Of course, to get really into a book like this, one has to have an inborn interest in the topic. It's not going to be for everyone, and that is why I gave it three stars instead of four. Still, I found the book to be a satisfactory combination of hard scholarship and general interest history to make my want to keep my copy. My only complaint is that, not knowing European geography as I would like to, it was difficult to follow many of the detailed discourses about the different tribal movements from place to place. Perhaps more maps would help. In the end, it's hard, scholarly history, but if that's your thing, it's a keeper.

This book was written by a large team of authors, each of whom wrote a particular chapter. I assume, therefore, that they have special expertise in that particular period or subject, and although this work may be a little too dry and scholarly for some, I found it provided excellent coverage and that it was still readable. The book benefits from recent research which the chapter authors discuss, and the illustrations are excellent, with the many pictures of artifacts, works of art, and grave excavations that I hadn't seen before in other works being probably the most striking thing about the book. Also, I would like to compliment the author of the excellent and very detailed discussion of copper and bronze metallurgy, where he discusses the advantages of two-piece castings of hand-axes in the later Bell-Beaker culture using arsenical copper, which aids both hardness and castability, which was very interesting. And in general, the dicussions of archaeological finds relating to improvements in cultural artifacts such as pottery making, metallurgy, weapons, and building techniques are one of the major strengths of the book. Overall, a worthwhile read although possibly a little too dry and technical for many people, and actually, I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.

As interesting a treatment as prehistory gets

The Oxford Illustrated History of Prehistoric Europe faces a Herculean task: to provide readable access to a delicate phase of history that is not easily comprehended - due to it's ever-shifting time boundaries - and the fact that, for much of prehistory, concepts and conclusions are chiefly formed from conjecture, due to a lack of fluid factual historical data.

Such it succeeds in doing formidably. At the time of writing the reviewer is still only at the chapter dealing with Reforming Barbaric Europe at the end of the Bronze Age (9). So far, the read has been mostly accessible to this undergraduate student, even if, on one or two of the initial chapters, a lot of technical language, and language related to biology and plants, made understanding harder. A complaint would have to fall on a perceivable lack of maps, especially in the initial chapters dealing with events taking place in the Continent. Many German towns or villages, and other places, will possibly escape the average reader (wikipedia had to be heavily used). There are some maps included, but these are certainly insufficient.

In broad strokes, except for the chapter by Sherratt on the Later Neolithic and Copper Ages, where a regional description of the different material remains is the order of the day which in this particular case makes for an extremely dull read, the articles tend to be concise, written in fluid prose, and thus provide an enjoyable reading experience.

Let us not forget the peculiar character of this delicate period, that of prehistoric and protohistoric Europe (the book covers prehistory from the Lower Paleolithic to a final chapter on Barbaric Europe (AD 300-700)), that, safe for the true enthusiast, is quite alien and hard to relate to for the rest of us. Still and all, the present Oxford tome provides an illuminating passage into this world. The rich illustrations that help visualize the subject matter being treated are a very helpful addition.

There is also a section with Chronological Tables at the back, that neatly summarize the main events, regionally, throughout Europe and farther afield (of the periods covered in the book), including also later aspects such as a list of the Roman Emperors, and so on - a most useful addition.

Overall, if you wish to delve into these themes and get a good idea of what characterizes the different epochs of prehistory (Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages, subsequent Barbaric Europe) this is definitely the tome to pick up - it is by far the most interesting book I have read on these topics. The book comes well bound, with a flexible paperback binding, and a very helpful further reading section with other literature on the specific chapters - certainly, you'll find your curiosity spiked by the reading of this volume, and I'm sure you'll subsequently want to read further into the areas that most interested you.

It should be noted that the initial articles on the Palaeolithic, especially the first, and the third on the Mesolithic, as well as those of the Neolithic (excluding Sherratt's first) deserve particularly worthy mention, for being so interesting and well laid out, especially considering how usually these more remote phases of prehistory are incredibly tiresome to learn about. This does not, however, mean that the subsequent treatment of the Minoan and Mycenaean Palace Cultures, as well as Bronze Age Europe are not exciting as well.

The overall usefulness of this book cannot be emphasized enough. A compelling and engaging introduction and sufficiently detailed analysis of prehistoric and protohistoric Europe from Oxford that should not be missed. 4.5/5
