Excellent overview of contemporary black politics

Not In Our Lifetimes is one of the few books written about contemporary black politics that takes the neoliberal turn seriously. The first of Dawson's books to be written for a lay audience, it is eminently readable and well-argued. The final word on this period hasn't been written because we are still in the middle of it. But I believe Not In Our Lifetimes will stand the test of time.

A Black Panther in heat!

No, the author is not a Black Panther, at least I don't think he is, but the title of this review gives you an idea of his objectivity. The book is one long grievance scream, droning on page after page of examples portraying government, white civil society, the media, etc. as anti-black either willfully or unconsciously. This isn't academics, it's neurosis unleashed. Undoubtedly the author could be the nap-matching champion of the world! If you are an angry hater looking for justification, BUY THIS BOOK! Believe me, even if you paid a hundred dollars for it, you'll get more than your money's worth. However, if your looking for a reasoned and objective evaluation of African American progress in the last half century and current political realities, well, all I can say is that if spend even one cent for this book you will have been over charged.

This book introduces readers to the notion of complex networks including the Internet, transportation networks, power grids, biological neural networks, and scientific cooperation networks, which provide challenges for future technological development. The recent spate of collapses in power grids and ongoing virus attacks on the Internet illustrates the need for knowledge about mathematical modeling, behavioral analysis, optimized planning and performance control in such networks. For advancement of methodologies and techniques, it has become clear that more fundamental knowledge will be needed in an engineering context about how dynamical networks work and how they can be controlled.

The book is divided into two parts: Part I consists of three chapters, presenting background information and basic materials needed to learn the subject, with a variety of exercises for illustrating fundamental concepts and familiarizing related modeling and analysis techniques. Part II contains several selected application-oriented stand-alone topics.

A starting point for beginners

This book is about networks covered from a dynamical point of view. The book is divided in two parts, the first covers fundamentals on graph theory, probability, dynamics and network topologies. It is a fair introduction to such a wide set of topics. The second part is devoted to special topics and applications. I was particularly interested in two chapters: one on network synchronization and one on network control. I liked the former and did not like the latter which is a not very well connected review of the authors' results in the field. Almost 50% of over 60 references of the chapter on network control are papers from the authors. The result is a chapter that is narrow in scope and focused on the authors' experience. Another unpleasant aspect is that there are many incorrect references to equation numbers. Fortunately, often it is obvious to which equation the authors really want to refer to. Most (almost all) the figures in the book are reprinted with permission. This means that most of the results reported in the book come from other references (correctly quoted). However, when it comes to results from simulations, it is not always clear what are the conditions under which the simulations were carried out. Hopefully this can be clarified by looking up the original references, but it would be nicer if all the details were in the book. To close with a positive point, there are many references quoted (including from the authors), and that is quite helpful to the newcomer.

Very well done

Although there are probably as many theodicies as there are people in the world, Stephen Davis does a fine job selecting scholars who represent various, major viewpoints on the classic problem of evil to elucidate their positions. John Roth represents a theodicy of protest whereby it is insinuated that God may not be totally good. God, says Roth, has a dark side and so must be persuaded by human protest and prayer to do what is right. Hick, of course, represents the position of an Irenean theodicy where God is portrayed as simply unable to stop all evil since evil is born our of free will and God cannot contradict the free will He gave us (lest it cease being free will). More than that, however, God has created a world in which trouble and evil exist in order that, by virtue of our free will, we might grow in character through the hardship. God, says Hick, is in the business of soul-making and has an overall plan for us as His creation to grow into spiritual maturity through the joys and sufferings of this life. Davis takes the classic Christian perspective position that evil is the result of human sin, that Jesus died to redeem us of that sin. We are responsible for the evil in the world, but God has created a way to redeem the world by taking sin on Himself in the form of Jesus Christ. By recieving Christ into our lives, not only are we promised a future in eternity without evil, but we are able to grow through the sufferings of life instead of shun them as worthless. He argues that there is no logical contradiction between the Biblical God (omnipotent and omnibenevolent) and the existence of evil in the world. Griffin represents the process theology position that God is evolving with the creation and so is learning as He goes. Matter, says Griffin, is eternal like God and has its own kind of "free will." Complexity in the arrangement of matter, furthermore, is tied to the amount of free will something has. Thus a rock can do less evil and yet God is less able to use it for good, but something as complex (and thus having more free will) as a human is capable of doing much more evil by resisting God and much more good by submitting to God. Finally, Sontag takes a highly skeptical position about God's goodness. God is unpredictable and violent at times and all we can do is hope for the best. We must acknowledge God's existence and power, but Sontag's god is semi-demonic in nature which explains evil in the world and why he doesn't stop it.
Of course, this small review doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of the indepth and well written arguments of each of these scholars. The book is complex enough for college and graduate classes but written with the lay-person in mind as well (the writers are careful to define their terms in most cases). Also, I really enjoyed the fact that each contributor has the opportunity to critique the other's theodicies and then the chance to defend against the other's critiques. This point/counterpoint approach was excellent and informative.
My only critique of this book is the subtitle ("Live Options in Theodicy"). While the five views represented in this book are indeed reflective of five major worldviews of the problem of evil, they are not the only *live* options. To suggest so implies that any theodicy significantly different than those represented in the book is not a valid option. But because the problem of evil is more of a mystery and less of a logical problem to be solved with a fancy syllogism, it can be approached in a number of ways -- not just five.

A great overview of responses to the problem of evil

Though some of the authors (particularly Phillips and Roth) do not offer theodicies proper, this books provides an excellent overview of theodicies and other responses to the problem of evil from some the foremost philosopher/theologians engaging this topic. While the interactions between the authors following each essay allows for further discussion beyond the initial essays, it could benefit strongly from an atheistic author strongly arguing for the problem of evil (though the atypical theologies of Roth, Griffen, and Phillips to offer some support for the problem of evil).

A Useful Exegetical Study

This slim book is an MTh thesis completed at Oak Hill College under the supervision of Acts scholar, Matthew Sleeman. It is within this thesis that a pastor, Martin Salter, attempts to answer a current debate with an exegetical study of a pericope in Acts.

One does not often run across a published MTh thesis, so the first question one must ask is what contribution does this monograph make to the current debate? First, what is the debate? Salter engages the debate concerning the charismatic use of spiritual gifts, noting that "the book of Acts is often cited" in this debate, primarily according to Salter, Acts 2:17-21. According to Salter, on one side of the debate stand the scholars that argue for the continuation of these gifts (notably, Michael Green and Craig Keener), and standing opposed are the "conservative scholars" that hold the stance that such gifts were revelatory in function "at a particular point in redemptive history and should not, therefore, be considered normative" (including: John MacArthur, John Stott, and O. Palmer Robertson). Following, John MacArthur, Salter, understands the quotation of Joel 3:1-5 (LXX) in Acts 2:17-21 as the "crux interpretum." Of course, the designation of Acts 2:17-21 as the "crux interpretum" is debatable. It could be that in Acts this passage is the "crux interpretum," but other passages such as 1 Corinthians 12-14 come to mind as other common passages from which "Pentecostals and charismatics develop their theology." But a couple things should be clarified, especially to the American reader first before we carry on assessing Salter's discussion.

First, such terms as "conservative" require more defining, and unfortunately I do not believe I am the one to define them with much clarity. It seems as Salter, a UK pastor, moves through his book terms such as "conservative" bear similar connotations as they do in America, but I would like to be surer. While in the UK for my PhD research, I found that I was often speaking in foreign terms, though still in English, when I used the categories, "liberal," "conservative," or"evangelical."

Second, this book is very timely for Salter's setting in the UK. Again, during my recent research visit to Bristol, UK, I observed as an "outsider" from "the other side of the pond" the resurgence of interest in charismatic gifts. As I spoke with one professor and former vicar in the Church of England I found that at least for the Church of England, which is not Salter's denomination, that there was a type of identity crisis occurring concerning charismatic gifts. Thus the timeliness of a study such as this makes more sense to one in the UK than it may to one in the America, where the debate may appear somewhat stale and passé, as the dates of the works of Salter's American conversation partners reveal.

Now, to many Salter's method of pursuing his study may seem like he has put the proverbial "cart before the horse" by exploring exegesis before the context and theology this pericope fits within in Luke-Acts. But I think he is right in how he pursues his study, as I will discuss below.

Salter begins his study examining Acts 2:17-21 with very accurate and thorough exegesis. I will not further comment on his exegesis in this review because I found it to be very well done and helpful for his specific concerns in this study. Second, Salter looks at Acts 2:17-21 in the context that is laid before it in Acts 1-2, and third what lies after 2:17-21 in the rest of the Lucan narrative of Acts. In part two one may ask, why does Salter not reach into the third gospel for more Lucan context for such a discussion? I too asked this question in my first cursory glance overt Salter's work, though of course this carries with it the whole debate of unity, which Salter seems to assume. But I was pleased to find when I read Salter's work that he often refers to the Lucan Gospel when discussing "conceptual and Scriptural allusions, and explicit references." His brief comments on Luke 24:27 were especially helpful for his study of allusions and conceptual echoes, especially in the broader debat concerning context, namely "Luke himself encourages the search for fulfillment of OT themes in Luke 24:47." Fourth, Salter moves to the Lucan purpose of the Joel 3:1-5 (LXX) quotation within the overall purpose of the Acts narrative. The theme that governs Acts, and thus his study, is the "restoration of Israel in her new Exodus." I think he is correct, and his exegesis thus far has made this a plausible theme. He thus concludes in this section that Luke's primary use of the quotation of Joel 3 in Peter's Pentecost speech is to give his auditor/reader "certainty" (Lk. 1:4). Fifth, and finally, Salter answers the overall question, "Is [Acts 2:17-21] a paradigm for contemporary ecclesiological or missional praxis, or [is it] a unique unrepeatable event in salvation history?"

Salter's study is very deductive in form, and I believe as I noted above that this is probably the best way of going about such a study. I would call this study "eth-egetical," meaning it is an ethics study, that is, how one should live based upon a solid exegetical foundation. It would seem to be less ecclesiological since it is more concerned with specific application of 'what to do,' and not the marks of the church in the gifts of the Spirit. Thus, I think Salter is correct to go about his study deductively, first looking at the evidence then begin to draw a conclusion of purpose and application to the church. So, this is well done. Unfortunately, in the end, I do not believe Salter's conclusion, his "third-way," will be well received or add something new to the debate. It turns out to be a type of soft-cessationist view, akin to views held by such popular pastors as John Piper or Mark Driscoll. This view sees the Spirit's work as not completely ceased in the ways Acts witnessed to, but possible where the Lord seeks to move significant ways, or in cultures that more often give authority to magic or "see increased amount of demon-possession, or the miraculous." But this does not render this study invaluable. I, first, think that Salter's study is very sobering on the issue. Studying such a live debate through Luke's narrative as narrative, and forgoing simple proof texting, is valuable to reminding the church of what it can still learn from narratives in the bible. And, second, biblical scholars, especially those concerned for the welfare of Christ's church, are in the business of reminding the people of God of what is true, and then what to do. Salter does this well. Not everyone will agree with where he lands, but he does land somewhere (which is a feat of sorts in this debate), and his foundation upon clear and thorough exegesis is strong.

About the Author
In October 2003, Henri Blocher was appointed to the Guenther H. Knoedler Chair of Theology at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. Since 1965 he has served as professor of systematic theology at the Faculté Libre de Théologie Evangélique in Vaux-sur-Seine near Paris, France. A leading evangelical theologian and statesman, Blocher was a member of the Lausanne Committee on World Evangelization (1975-1980), served the World Evangelical Fellowship/Alliance in a number of capacities, and taught in schools in Europe, Australia, Africa, Canada and the US. He is currently president of the Fellowship of European Evangelical Theologians. Blocher studied at a number of institutions including the Sorbonne, London Bible College, Gordon Divinity School, and Faculté Libre de Théologie Protestant of Paris. He has written six books, four of which have appeared in English, and several dozen articles. His English publications include Original Sin: Illuminating the Riddle, Evil and the Cross: Christian Thought and the Problem of Evil and In the Beginning: The Opening chapters of Genesis.

Relevant to Bible-and-science issues, but also to far more.

When I was single and about to leave college some 15 years ago, a semester-long private study of this book and the book of Genesis itself filled me with a new sense of meaning concerning my existence as a man in this world.
Blocher argues on the basis of the elaborate literary structure of Gen. 1:1-2:3 that the original readers would have read it figuratively. The 7 days of creation represent neither 24-hour periods of time, nor long epochs of natural history, but are instead a literary structure that conveys meaningful and true content about the relationship of God, humankind, and the creation. No chronological significance was intended whatsoever, Blocher believes, nor inferred by the original readers. The literary phenomena he explores include the repetition of certain key words 7 or 10 times (numbers with symbolic value to the ancient Hebrews), the symmetrical correspondence of creation day 1 (light and darkness) to day 4 (sun, moon, stars), day 2 (sky and ocean) to day 5 (sea animals and birds), and day three to 3 (land) to day 6 (animals and humankind), etc. Moreover, the parallels--or rather deliberate contrasts--between Gen. 1 and other ancient Near Eastern creation stories, show how Gen. 1 served as a pointed polemic that exalted a higher concept of the utterly transcendent/immanent God to whom we are accountable, over and against polytheism. Even the reader who retains some kind of chronological understanding of the days of creation will be enriched by an exploration of these literary phenomena of the text. (A fascinating article, "Space and Time in the Genesis Cosmogony," by Dr. Meredith G. Kline of Westminster Theological Seminary in California and Gordon-Conwell Seminary, argues similar conclusions, and makes good companion reading to Blocher concerning Gen. 1.
Blocher sees the story of the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2 and 3 as a depiction in mythical terms of a genuinely historical fall of our first human ancestors from fellowship with God. The "seed of the woman" promised in Gen. 3:15, Jesus Christ, restores our access to the "tree of life" (see Rev. 22:2,14,19) of which human sin deprived us. The whole Bible is God's revelation about real historical realities, even if some of those realities (such as our remote origins and distant future) are more aptly and naturally described to us in figurative terms, while others (such as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ) are more appropriately narrated in a literal manner.
Blocher's book has pastoral value that goes far beyond its relevance to these particular issues of biblical interpretation. The chapter on Man and Woman is worth the price of the book. I was left with a deepened appreciation of the significance of our earthly lives and their activities (marriage, family, work, etc.) in the context of God's plan to call out for himself a redeemed human community that is restored through Christ to be the image of God, and that will enjoy communion with God and one another forever.

conservative thoughtful Biblical exegesis of Gen 1-3

First, i come to this book as an extended directed self study on the issues involved in the Creation-Evolution-Design debate. This book i rate as one of the 5 most significant books for a conservative reformed Christian who wants to come to reasoned and faithful conclusions in the CED debate. It is conservative which i define to be conscious and considerate of the traditions of the past, to take them seriously, not simply accepting something because it is new. It is Biblical in the way the author is very careful to allow the Scripture's Words to speak for themselves, being very careful not to read into the words his own cherished beliefs, but to allow the Word to speak to him, authoritatively and reliably. To this end he is not infected by the liberal J-P-D documentary interpretation so often evident in exegesis or interpretation.
Second, the book is significant on two levels, the first is the exegetical level, the principles of understanding that the author explores in the first few chapters. Second is the line by line study that forms the bulk of the book, roughly chpt 3 on.
The structure of the book is that of Gen 1-3 but the way he writes is interesting and worth a moment of reflection here. The chapters are more like consistent essays than the usual exegesis bound to the text. He takes a major theme in the next section of Genesis then expands it to cover this issue through the past interpreters and links to other related Scripture. It roughly follows the systematic organization of reformed covenant theology.
pg 26 has what i think is the best analysis of the human writers relationship to Scripture. "That rule follows from the humanity of Holy Scripture. In the act of inspiration God did not turn his sookesmen into robots; his Word became their word, under their signature and their responsiblility. Thus we have no right to go over their heads in order to set forth a 'divine' meaning which they would never possilby have imagined-even if those men did not grasp the whole import of what they attested God in his condescension has limited himself to their instrumentality; our interpretation must conform to the corresponding discipline."
If the church would hend this advice much of the CED debate would be solved, for we would cease to search Genesis for the equivalent of quarks, trying to query the first few chapters of the Bible and mine it for scientific truths. Rather we would, as this author does, submit to the authority of Scripture to speak to the way we do science, to the ideas that we bring to the universe as we question the master workmen's creation that we are a small part of.
The book is literary framework in its approach to Gen1-3, M. Kline being the best example of this in the english speaking world. Anyone familiar with the CED issues would be advised to read the first 2 chapters of this book simply to see a careful analysis of exegesis and the result of allowing Scripture to speak for itself rather than being pushed out of shape by young earth creationists whom would interpret the 7 days too literally. Or by scientific reconcilationists would would try to find modern science confirmed in the light appearing before the sun(ie the big bang).
The first principle he outlines carefully is to allow Scripture to speak to its first listeners, their culture, their history. His exegetical task doesn't end there but extends to teaching what these things mean to us in our place in space and time. But this application, this preaching follows critical-historical interpretation not prior to it as so many would desire.
Thanks to the author for this excellent book and i hope to read more from his pen.

A MAJOR PRESENTATION OF THE "FRAMEWORK" INTERPRETATION OF GENESIS

Henri A. G. Blocher is a French evangelical theologian who is Gunther Knoedler Professor of Systematic Theology at Wheaton College Graduate School and is Professor of Systematic Theology, Faculte Libre de Theologie Evangelique, Vaux-sur-Seine, France. He is a proponent of the "framework" interpretation of the Genesis creation account. He has also written books such as Original Sin: Illuminating the Riddle (New Studies in Biblical Theology) and Evil and the Cross: An Analytical Look at the Problem of Pain.

Here are some quotations from this 1984 translation of the 1979 book:

"One point ought to be established. The alternative of all or nothing rests on purely arbitrary grounds. The use of figurative language by no means determines the main question, that of the connection of the narrative with the events that are located and dated from the beginning. The acknowledgement of symbolic elements hardly weighs at all in favour of a symbolic interpretation of the whole. Conversely, those who favour the literal historicity of the content have no reason to demand the same literalness of the language. Scripture... abounds in examples of mixed genre." (Pg. 37)
"One must be sure that the text DEMANDS the literal interpretation. It must not be adopted out of loyalty to the past, out of sheer habit, or from a reflex hardening before the possible threat of apostasy. Might that in fact be the case?" (Pg. 48)
"The literary interpretation takes the form of the week attributed to the work of creation to be an artistic arrangement, a modest example of anthropomorphism that is not to be taken literally. The author's intention is not to supply us with a chronology of origins... He wishes to bring out certain themes and provide a theology of the sabbath... To put it plainly, both the genre and the style of the Genesis prologue, as our introductory chapter saw them, provide strong grounds for presuming in favour of the literary interpretation."
