Great ideas

I teach 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade science. I had the opportunity to see Rick Smith at a workshop, and I was aboslutely blown away by the amount of ready-to-use ideas he provided. Although the workshop was mainly focused on his material in Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great Teaching (also an awesome book), Smith brought up ideas from Picture This!.

Picture This! provides ideas for implementing the use of "visual rubrics" in your class. Examples of ideas I borrowed- I let kids keep their textbooks in my classroom, and I was irritated that I had to fix the piles at least once a week. So, I followed Rick's advice and took a picture of books in messy piles; I photoshopeed the word "NO!" on it. I also took a picture of the textbooks stacked the way I wanted and photoshopped "YES!" on the photo. I hung the two pictures up side-by-side near the textbooks; within a day, all the books were stacked in neat piles because the kids easily understood what I wanted.

I also used a "Readiness to Learn" rubric. My 7th graders are loud and obnoxious- more so than any class of 7th grade I had before- and it was pointless to try and yell over them to be quiet. I had kids volunteer for pictures; the first picture was of chaos in the room, which I labeled as "5." I worked down the scale to "1," where everyone in the picture was ready to learn. This system was SO SLICK. If it got too loud in my room, I'd simply hold up the number on my figers that the kids were at. Once I was able to get down to a 1, I was able to continue.

There are SO many rubrics in this book that can be used. I think it would be the most useful to elementary teachers, but I found many uses (beyond those two things listd above) for my middle and high school kids.

There are many great examples of rubrics throughout the book, including a password to an online collection of rubrics & videos that you can use as desired. This is an amazing book that is incredibly useful- a picture is definitely worth a thousand words!!!

Very nice!

I started out my year with my Learning Strategies class with these pictures and something to discuss every day about them for the first week or two. They then added these pics to their folders after writing a description of each. I found this book very helpful with my ESE students and I can see where most teachers, esp. in ESE classes and the lower or middle grades, would find this book invaluable as well.

Great figures

This is a good atlas for someone who has some familiarity with skull base/temporal bone anatomy. The illustrations provide a very clear view of the key steps in each procedure without bogging the reader down with "too much anatomy." Attempting to perform the procedures; however, should not be attempted without a good understanding of the anatomy not shown in the figures.

Overall, a great book that shows the "bottom line" steps for each approach extremely well.

One of the best anatomical approach atlases I've seen. If you want to learn skull base surgery this book is a must own. When cross referenced with cadaveric and intraoperative photos, it would be hard not to learn these approaches (this book is all step wise drawings).

More than a textbook

Prof. Hirsch and Prof. Weinberger are the admirable international figures in psychiatric research. As the editors, they conjoined the most famous contributors of every subtitle in schizophrenia research. Reading it in 1999, some of the contents seemed a little out of date. However, to consolidate current findings and concepts on schizophrenia, it is not only a textbook but also a historical masterpiece. Next edition of such an encyclopedia on schizophrenia may not be composed until next decade.

So bad. Couldn't even finish it

This book was so hard to get into. It is poorly written and a ridiculous premise. I hate how weak the main character is and the twin brothers are basically assaulting her and taking advantage. She's an idiot for letting them do that to her. And the way Cole speaks to her is just ridiculous. He barely knows her and wants to cherish her all of a sudden? Such a bad book.

SPOILER: The twins were jerks in the worst way. They treated the female lead (who had major self-esteem issues) with such blatant disrespect that I was pissed off every time one of them conversed with her. I wish it had been solely about the oldest stepbrother Cole.

Even though we may behave differently in cyberspace than in the "real world," our actions are predictable responses to particular features of online environments, contends Wallace as she sets out to conceptualize behavior on the Internet. Drawing on the latest Internet simulation studies as well as classic psychological experiments and business and social science research, she provides an expansive overview of online behaviorAfrom deception and aggression to altruism and romanceAas well as of the elements that make the Internet "addictive." Among Wallace's observations: real-world psychological research confirms that people tend to become less inhibited in anonymous situations; thus, online environments that foster anonymity can prompt individuals to behave in more extreme ways (e.g., acting aggressively or making intimate personal disclosures) than they would in a face-to-face context. On the other hand, individuals don't tend to conform to unanimous group positions on the Net as they often do in person. The relative lack of consequences for behavior on the Internet is an important influencing factor: Internet users can experiment with alterations in their identities that they might not be willing to risk in the real world. However, Wallace cites many examples of poseurs who have inflicted undue harm on their trusting online companions. New-media expert and Director of Information Management at the University of Maryland, Wallace has written an ambitious book on the psychological dynamics of the Internet in all its formsAe-mail, chat rooms, the web, etc. With chapters devoted to a variety of Internet issues, this book perhaps bites off a bit more than it can chew. While it is organized in broad, textbook fashion, few of the 12 chapters do their topics justice; Internet pornography, for instance, is given only about 13 pages. The discussion of several factors, such as impression formation and aggression, are thought-provoking and develop some interesting ideas, but much of Wallace's evidence is anecdotal and reveals the relative lack of experimental rigor in this emerging area of human experience. This very newness partly explains the absence of substantial scientific data on the Internet in popular culture while also making Wallace's one of the few books on the subject; perhaps we should wait for better efforts on both counts. Informative book on a brand new subject!

Supported by knowledge of recent research, the author provides insight into how people sometimes behave differently on the Internet than they do in real life. According to Wallace, behaviors based on psychology in real life often do not carry over into the virtual world in the same way. For frequent users of the Internet, this information is not startling but eye-opening. For those who use the Internet little or not at all, this is a well-presented introduction to the cyberworld. Although academic in tone, the book is easy to read as it explores the many facets of life on the "Net". Because it is based on clinical research, it gets a bit wearying near the end. However, be sure to read it in its entirety because it is well presented, very inclusive, and quite interesting. Since completing this book, I am more fully cognizant of the different behaviors of "Web" users each time I log on. This would include those inhabitants of cyberspace as well as those who dwell within my own home! :-)

A broad but surface coverage

Generally, the "The Psychology of the Internet" is a broad sweeping, albeit whirlwind, run through a wide gamut of psychological issues as they might--or might not--apply to the Internet. This is an important topic that could provide insight into how the Internet, as it becomes increasingly pervasive, will affect human relations. From my perspective, some of the more salient topics included the advantages and disadvantages of group interactions and the possibilities for conflict and resolution. Dr. Wallace provides a good analysis of some of the ways in which individual behavior changes on the Net and off. Additionally, the book covers a number of other topics, such as the psychology of "flaming," pornography, Internet addiction, altruism, and gender issues.
For those who are well read in the area of psychology on the Internet, there is a fair amount of rehashing of material that has been extensively covered elsewhere. For example, Dr. Sherry Turkle's 1995 "Life on the Screen," extensively discusses the fluidity of personalities on the web, the issues of anonymity, and the effects of computerized psychotherapy. Both Turkle's work, and the seminal work of Rheingold ("The Virtual Community"), have already extensively covered the peculiar nature of MUDs and Usenet, as well as the notorious cases of cyberrape on LambdaMOO and other cyberdeceptions. The book also relies heavily on the oft-cited studies of Amy Bruckman and Dr. Sara Kiesler.
In general, the topics that are presented appear to be well documented in a clear and accessible style with up-do-date information. Dr. Wallace has done an excellent job of presenting a full spectrum of psychological issues, although much of the discussion is on the state of research on the issue in general, with follow-on discussion as to how it would apply to the Internet. In some other areas, it was what you would expect and consequently less thought provoking.
The beginning of the book is particularly strong, but it fades in the last two chapters into kind of a grab bag of Internet issues that, for my taste, have an only peripheral relevance to a discussion of psychology on the Internet. Overall, the book seems to be a good overview and does a superior job of summarizing the current state of research, albeit without providing much in the way of a conclusion.

A well researched and highly illuminative book

This book came at a time when most books written about internet by social scientists, journalists etc., were either too focused on very incidental benefits of internet like the virtual communities, or starkly apolocalyptic in their analyses or chracterized by a Pollyanna utopianism. More speculative thinking that research and analysis chracterizes many books on the internet.

This one, based on a thorough grounding in social psychology and a comprehensive review of empirical literature on the subject, studies how behavior and thinking has got effected by the internet, how we behave offline and online, how going online effects us etc.

However, this is a book on the social psychology of the internet and not psychology proper. It's more about how we behave online etc., than about how internet alters cognition. Nevertheless, at the end of reading it, the reader feels a sense of having returned with a much deeper understanding than he or she could have achieved on his/her own.

The Color of Her Panties=Funny

I just finished this book and I think it was really great. I enjoyed reading it and stayed up past my bedtime to read it. It was very funny and I thought it had a good plot. Sometimes you have a strong feeling about what was going to happen before it happens and I found that when it does happen, it is like a great surprise. It also made my think. I couldn't put it down it was so good. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I really liked the books Man From Mundania and Question Quest just a little bit better. It is very funny, as Piers Anthony always is, and the demoness Metria is so funny. She is also one of my favorite characters. I loved all the characters! To put it simple, it was just GREAT!
