Pretty good collection

I like the selection of songs, and I understand why they are arranged in the keys that they are in (for playing in groups of traditional musicians), but in many cases that means that they are not in the easiest keys for an ukulele. So, that makes this a beginner /intermediate level book in my estimation, rather than just entry level.

This book has an explanation of different strumming patterns, picking and rolls, then each song has 3 arrangements; 1st- the music melody line and lyrics and chords and tabs for the Uke, and then 2nd- is strumming with chords and tabs and the 3rd is rolling with chords and tabs. This gives you everything you want!!! He also explains how to do certain exercises or strums on his cd, I am soooo pleased with this book and I almost didn't buy it because it was almost 20 bucks, I'm so glad I did!! After you learn these methods you can apply them to any of your songs! Oh I almost forgot, I also saw that Fred Sokolow has some youtube videos and in the "beginning for ukulele players" he demonstrates these strums and rolls - very helpful. I would very much recommend this to anyone trying to learn bluegrass on the ukulele, if you only get one book get this!!

Good book.When I heard the CD my first reaction was: "I love to play like this" which is a good starting point for a textbook.
I love that each song has three arangements, strum and sing along, strum with melody and fingerpicking.
So that enables play-along with my friends. Boosted my Ukulele experience.

Linda V. Berens Linda V. Berens, Ph.D. is the Director and Founder of Interstrength Associates, which provides organizational consulting. She is the author of Understanding Yourself and Others, an Introduction to Temperament, among other titles and numerous training materials. As an organizational development consultant, she applies systems thinking and understanding individual differences to solving organizational problems. She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Educational Psychologist, and has over thirty-five years experience using temperament and type with individuals and teaching these theories to professionals. Linda is recognized internationally for her contributions to the field of psychological type, for integrating temperament and Jung's typology, and for developing user friendly training materials for practical application of those theories. Dario Nardi Dario Nardi, Ph.D. teaches social science and computing at the University of California (Los Angeles) in the Human Complex Systems degree program. He has been working with type and temperament since 1992, and has been intimately involved in innovative product development with Interstrength Associates. He is the author of various books including 8 Keys to Self-Leadership and Multiple Intelligences and Personality Type. Dario received his degree in systems science from S.U.N.Y. Binghamton's Watson School of Engineering. His background in systems thinking, linguistics and artificial intelligence, undergraduate curriculum design and writing has led him to breakthroughs using multiple methods and models for getting at the "true self," as well as for restructuring academic courses to suit all learning styles.

not shooting at the moon

The classification of temperament is as at least two millenia old. Some of this effort falls decidely in the the half-baked side of the pan. Yet much of it is decidely helpful in understanding 'the way we are wired' and 'the way we process things', to use two very modern metaphors of personality typing.

Maybe you've never thought of it like that.

Linda Berens and Dario Nardi want you to think again, and to discover yourself in the profiles they've developed and invited you to try on. Their paradigm is the well-known Myers-Briggs assignment of four letters to a temperament, each of them a choice between two options. If you run the math, you'll quickly discover that there are sixteen possibilities, thus the title of this book. (Full disclosure: I'm an INTJ, so I'm really enjoying systematically reporting on this book, gentle reader.)

Berens and Nardi have made this guide user friendly and it is not necessary to have taken the Myers-Briggs 'test' in order to use it. In my opinion, the reader will greatly benefit from having done so. There are so many 'hooks' that one finds to hang one's temperament on in just about any prose description, that I find the M-B system is almost necessary in order to inject some element of objectivity into the process.

The great value of Berens' and Nardi's work is their trademarked (yes) two-word description of each of the sixteen types (INTJ: 'Conceptualizer Director') *and* the one-page 'Self-Portrait: What's it like to be you?'.

The latter is distilled from interviews with individuals belonging to each personality type. I have checked this against a number of friends in the presence of family and peers and found an extraordinary degree of confirmation that this is how the typed individuals actually feel about the world and their selves in it.

This book could serve as good introduction to the modern practice of temperament/personality classification. I also find it helpful in a business/organization context, where mutual understanding (without the touchy-feely excesses that lead so predictably to the gag reflex) is often essential to accomplishing shared goals and avoiding hallway assassinations.

Review - 16 Personality Types by L.V. Berens

I have most of the books probably published on the Myers Briggs Persoanlity Types and explanations. But, the book by Linda Berens, while each type is covered in a short space and not as in depth as many, did an excellent job of giving the salient points for each type. It is probably the best organized book on the 16 types, and the best general description and discussion of each. I found it an easy read and for people new to this process, the very best overview I have read. It is an excellent book to recommend to 'beginners' in unstanding the "Types", and the reader can go to other books for more in depth discussions if they choose. But, this book is the best one for new readers in the subject. It is now one of my favorites on Types and I have already recommended it to several people. Jim Stitley 8/9/2005

As a Time correspondent, Grant (Survivors frequently visited the fighter pilots who flew missions over North Vietnam from the carrier Oriskany, and interviewed many of them anew after the war. The material he collected, combined with diligent research and considerable journalistic talent, comprises a first-class account of an important aspect of the war that has not received major attention. The pilots are portrayed in a dimensional way rarely found in war literature, and Grant conveys vividly what it was like to live through intense anti-aircraft fire, dogfights with MIGs, downing and rescue (as well as downing and capture) and psychic burnout. This is more than an air-combat book, however: the author follows the course of disagreements between the high command and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara over the usefulness of the air war, the reaction of the pilots to charges of bombing civilian areas, the struggle of a pilot's widow to confirm that he has been killed and then to reconcile herself to his death. In this sympathetic and penetrating history the pilots of a fighter squadron aboard the U.S.S. Oriskany battle the internal politics of their unit, their own doubts about the Vietnam War, and fears for their safety, while acting like fighter jocks, all bravado and hard living. Laced through this diverse, personality-filled work are the words of wives and many of the pilots themselves and the author's telling assessment of the bombing policy, which was tentative and ineffective despite the courage and skill of the men who carried it out. The action begins in July 1966 and ends as a final run is cancelled due to bad weather in 1972. The 1966 Viet Nam cruise of the U.S.S. Oriskany (CVA 34)

From the very first chapter, I knew that "Over the Beach" was the diary I had failed to keep while serving on the U.S.S. Oriskany (CVA 34) during it's deployment to the Gulf of Tonkin in 1966. Over and over again, I found myself reliving the actions described there. Instantly putting faces to the names. Remembering the 16 October 1966 fire in hangar bay one. The only mistery left is how someone who was not there know so much of the times and the people ? It was genuinely like finding an old family photo album, or listning to an elderly uncle reminise about things that happened in your youth. "Over the Beach" should be viewed as a diary into the times and minds of those that flew from Aircraft Carriers during the early Viet Nam era. It is not a book to satisfy the idle mind, but one that fills in the gaps created by time and selective amnesia. To someone in great thirst, a small tumbler of cold water will seem as an ocean. "over the beach" provided exactly the same satisfaction to me.

History as it should be...

Zalin Grant's "Over The Beach" is an account of fighter squadron 162 from the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany during the Vietnam war. Grant does a masterful job of blending the history, with the real lives of the people who were a part of that history.
The reader feels the palpable emotions of the pilots as they "crossed over the beach" on their way to targets in Hanoi and Haiphong. The squadron was incredibly successful, but with that success came great loss. Many pilots were shot down over North Vietnam where there was almost no chance of rescue. The reader also hears from those pilots who became prisoners.
Grant incorporates the history of the air conflict into the book as well. Johnson, Nixon, McNamara, and Kissinger all weigh heavily into this account. The politics of the conflict led to a war fought on confusing terms. But this doesn't read like some history text.
From the terror of carrier landings to the wild frat boy parties aboard the Oriskany, this book covers it all. From the adulterous behavior of many of the piots to the gut-wrenching roller coaster of emotions suffered by an MIA's wife, this book does not hold any punches. It may be hard to find this book (some libraries may have it) but it is one of the finest (and personal) accounts of carrier warfare in Vietnam I have ever read.

Gripping!

This book is about the fighter pilots of the Fighter Squadron 162 - based on the USS Oriskany. This book is an excellent account of the exploits of carrier based fighter pilots. You understand their fears, their trepidations, the danger of carrier landings at night, and the general terror and excitement of flying fighter jets in Viet Nam. It's told in a "you are there" context. We feel the pain of the wives as they learn their husbands are shot down and not coming home; the strain they go through awaiting word of their husbands. The book is quite stunning and difficult to put down. It's one of the best I've read concerning the air war in Viet Nam.

The modular format of the book will facilitate its use by all students, researchers and professionals with an interest in igneous petrology. A basic knowledge of geochemistry, mineralogy, phase diagrams, regional geology and global tectonics is assumed, but such advanced topics as trace element and isotope geochemistry can be omitted initially if the reader's background is inappropriate. The text is profusely illustrated and the bibliography contains over 1000 carefully selected references.

Marge Wilson graduated in geology at the University of Oxford. She then spent a year at the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently studied the petrogenesis of nepheline syenites from the Gardar province of Greenland, leading to a PhD from the University of Leeds. Her research has focused on island-arc, oceanic-island and intra-continental plate tectonic settings.

Great book!

I took Marge's class at Leeds and had to use her book a couple times there, but it was only recently that I read most of it all the way through. It is helping so much in my thesis work and research; I strongly recommend the book for anyone doing any sort of igneous geochem!
