Confessions of a Pharmacist is, in a sense my autobiography. As such, I have tried to tell the story of my varied career in the field. During my career, I have been a Director of Pharmacy in three hospitals, a Retail Pharmacist, an owner of a pharmacy, a Nuclear Pharmacist, a Floating Pharmacist and I even worked overseas in Saudi Arabia in an attempt to help bring their medical practices into the twentieth century. The book is intended to provide an inside look at the noble profession of pharmacy and I hope that, in writing it, I have helped demystify much of what goes on behind the counter. I believe that, as pharmacists, we make a significant contribution to patient care. Especially in the paradigm introduced by the University of Southern California known as “Clinical Pharmacy” and in which every pharmacy school in the country now educates its pharmacists. Pharmacists have a long way to go. For example, they need to come out of their shells and become better at universally educating patients in how to use medications, thus impacting patient care and helping make it more efficient and better for everyone. I hope the book enlightens and informs you and helps you, as a layperson, understand what really takes place when you entrust us to fill your prescriptions.

Confessions of a Pharmacist/An Honest Review

I was very enlightened when I read Robert Mix's book. There was a lot of information I was surprised I enjoyed reading about and am now encouraging my 19 year old daughter to become a pharmacist. He included tips for lay people that I found helpful. Most importantly was keeping your medical records with you at all times in case of an accident where you could be unconscious. Another grand one was to put your in case of emergency phone numbers labelled as such in your contact list on your cell phone. His take on how important it is to have human contact with patients I found refreshing. In a growing world of declining public relations I like the idea of my pharmacist taking the time to go over my prescriptions with me. I hope there continues to be more pharmacists like he was. Rob Mix proves to had been an extremely caring and diligent pharmacist and his writing on the subject reflects that as well.

This is an excellent book for individuals who are seeking a career in pharmacy, for current pharmacists, and for the layman who seeks to be enlightened about medications. Obviously, Dr. Mix is highly educated or he would not be able to write a book with such insight and knowledge. I actually loved the personal stories as he witnessed them during his days of work in his field. One comes away with a much better appreciation for pharmacists who work hard on a daily basis to provide medications accurately and promptly to all people who are in need. Without question, pharmacists are an invaluable resource and should be given the same respect as physicians. In the final analysis, Dr. Mix shares his personal story which in itself is heartwarming. Through his own trials and tribulations of life, he still manages to maintain a positive and sincere outlook on life.

He tell it like it is.

Informative and reinforced my thinking regarding medications. It had a positive impact on me. The author has deep passion and emotion and overcame huge odds to positively impact all of us through writing his story. He shares his financial situations and relationship difficulties in an open and honest way that touched me deeply. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. His love for the profession and the family are remarkable. People wanting to know more about their medications need to read this book. I was informed about the truths and myths of many drugs.

About the Author
Joan Manley is Professor Emeritus from the University of Texas at El Paso. During her 33 years as a faculty member, she gave over 100 workshops and conference presentations and authored 50 journal articles. She was a trainer and tester of the Oral Proficiency Interview, which led to the current emphasis on skill building and proficiency as exemplified in teaching programs such as HORIZONS.

Stuart Smith received her degrees and her first training and experience in teaching at the University of Texas at Austin. She has been teaching at Austin Community College since 1981 and has been authoring foreign language textbook and textbook materials since 1986.

Marc Andre Prevost received his degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. He taught seven years at The University of Texas at Austin and has been a professor at Austin Community College since 1993. He has coauthored foreign language textbooks since 1986.

John McMinn is Professor of French and Spanish at Austin Community College, where he has taught since 1986. After doing graduate studies in Romance Linguistics at The University of Texas at Austin, he also worked as an editor of high school and college-level language books. In addition to HORIZONS, he is coauthor of two Spanish textbooks.

Fine book, but it DOES NOT include the iLrn access card, which my school requires. Now I have to return it and buy a new one somewhere else.

Not as advertised.

This book is fine in many respects (pedagogy, design), but I have a problem with the fact that the advertised digital resources that accompany the book are available only with additional purchases. Not small purchases, one for Premium Web Site Instant Access at $32, one via Heinle Learning Center for $133 (as of 2.26.2015). This book is exploitatively priced as it is. The advertised web resources that accompany the text made me feel they might partially justify the expense. Then I learn that access to these resources cost another $165. It is unfortunate in my view that the authors would engage to cooperate in such a scheme designed to prey upon the built-in market of students. Disgusting, right?

Great read, super informative and motivational!

This is an excellent book for nurses who want to expand their communication abilities. Several new concepts were introduced to me.
Ms. Clancy gets right to the heart of the most important matter in healthcare--- transferring information to those who need it most.

An excellent book that explores an accessible and engaging way the importance of good communication between nurses, patients and their families. The book persuasively explains why good communication is beneficial not only for the patients and their families, but for better medical outcomes. This was created for every nurse that is starting out or has years of experience. You will find it illuminating and useful, while also remaining a compelling read for non-professionals who, to one degree or another, have to engage with the medical establishment (which is all of us, at one point or another!). Definitely buy this book.

A must have book for every nurse's library! This book was well written with real-time information. It covers a broad range of topics of communicating within the health care setting. The concepts in here are invaluable. They are presented in a way where one can start using them quickly in everyday life. Very useful resource with many tips.

As an MSN student this book was really helpful for my management classes. It gives clear instructions on how to talk to patients and other team members. The author does a great job with offering examples. I will be keeping this book in my office to reference and recommending it to other healthcare professionals.
